PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana is a central government scheme that helps households put solar panels on their roofs, with the aim of up to 300 units of free electricity a month.

How much you get

  • 1 kW system: ₹30,000
  • 2 kW system: ₹60,000
  • 3 kW and above: ₹78,000, the maximum

Who qualifies

  • An Indian household that owns its house
  • A roof with space for solar panels
  • A valid electricity connection
  • No earlier subsidy taken for solar panels

How the money reaches you

You register and apply on pmsuryaghar.gov.in, your electricity company approves the application, and a registered vendor installs the system. After the net meter is fitted and the system is inspected, you add your bank details on the portal and the subsidy is paid into your account.

You pay the vendor for the system; the subsidy is a refund from the government, not a discount at the time of purchase.
